Der Tiefe Brunnen im Brunnenhaus des Äußeren Burghofs stammt wahrscheinlich aus der ersten Entstehungszeit der Kaiserburg. Er ist seit dem 14. Jahrhundert urkundlich erwähnt. Der Brunnenschacht reicht 47 Meter tief in den Burgfelsen hinein. Während Zeiten großen Wasserbedarfs - bei Kaiserbesuchen, Hof- und Reichstagen - wurden zusätzlich Wasserfässer aus der Stadt in die Burg gebracht.
The Deep Well in the well house of the Outer Courtyard probably dates from the very earliest days of the Imperial Castle. It is mentioned in documents from the 14th century onwards. The well-shaft extends 47 metres down inside the castle rock. During times when large quantities of water were needed - imperial visits, or court sessions - water was also brought up to the castle additionally in pails from the city.

In the middle of the bailey is one of the most important buildings in the castle complex, the well house with the Deep Well.
