Der Garten trägt den Namen der berühmten Künstlerin und Naturforscherin Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717), die von 1668 bis 1682 in Nürnberg lebte und arbeitete. Ihr Wohnhaus lag in unmittelbarer Nähe der Kaiserburg Nürnberg und sie konnte diesen kleinen Garten neben dem Heidenturm für ihre Blumen- und Insektenstudien nutzen.
The garden is named after the famous artist and naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717), who lived and worked in Nuremberg from 1668 to 1682. The house where she lived was next to the Nuremberg Imperial Castle and she was able to use this small garden by the Heathens' Tower for her flower and insect studies.
