Enslaved People at Sunnyside
Sunnyside in Sevier Park
Slave census schedules rarely included the names of enslaved people, but wills and other property records did. Using an 1853 property transfer document that quotes Jesse Benton's will, we know that Horatio and Charlotte Benton and Julius and Kitty Martin were enslaved at Sunnyside. Horatio and Charlotte were enslaved here with their daughters: Malinda, Ellen, Louisa, and Caroline. Horatio was the coachman and Charlotte was the cook for the Benton-Douglass-Sevier family. We also know that Julius and Kitty (Kittie) and their children Mitchell, John, Jane, Ross, and Bill were enslaved here.

(Right): The 1860 Slave Census Schedule show Mary Benton (age 70) and 18 of the people enslaved at Sunnyside. Ages of each person are record, but no names. Unfortunately, none of the cabins or other outbuildings associated with this time period remain. -Metro Historical Commission
