Inscription.
Baseball was officially organized in the 1860s. During that period not many African Americans were able to compete in this newly formed league. Years later, around the turn of the 20th century, Black ballplayers were for the most part still being shut out of big league competition.

As early as 1902, African Americans started forming their own teams and began "barnstorming" across the country searching for other teams to compete against. In February 1920, African-American team owners met at a YMCA in Kansas City, Missouri and the National Negro League was born.

Toledo, Ohio was fortunate to be the home of three professional Negro League baseball teams who played their home games at Swayne Field Baseball stadium.
