Inscription. Pitched professional baseball's first perfect game, June 12, 1880 for Worcester, Mass. against Cleveland in a national league contest as baseball's first regular left handed pitcher, he forced opposing teams to change their batting strategies. His dominance caused colleges to enact the first rules barring professionals from amateur play. After practicing as a physician, he was a teacher, administrator, and coach for 40 years in Toledo. He married Mary Naomi Chapin they had three daughters.
