Rotary is a global network of community volunteers. Rotary members are business and professional leaders who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. Over 1.2 million members in more than 32,000 clubs in 170 countries carry out service projects in their local communities and abroad to address such critical issues as poverty, health, hunger, illiteracy, and the environment.

The desire for a Rotary club in Fairbanks began in the late 1920's (when the local population was only 3,500). However, due to the requirement of attending weekly meetings and the difficulty of traveling hundreds of miles to other clubs for makeups, the first club was not chartered until September, 1940. Rotary International's motto, "Service Above Self" is aptly demonstrated by the numerous projects depicted here.
