W.H. Weatherly and Company Building. . , The W.H. Weatherly and Company building was constructed circa 1921-23 by William Henry Weatherly and his brother Joe Elwood Weatherly, notable residents of Elizabeth City. It was the first fire-proof commercial building of its type in Elizabeth City. The first two floors were home to the wholesale grocery portion of the business, while the third floor housed “one of the biggest and most modern candy factories in North Carolina”., The Weatherly Candy Company was a major distributor of hard candies throughout the south, nationally, and internationally and at one point provided employment for over 50 people. The company was interested in innovation and utilized state of the art machinery to assist in the manufacturing process. The candy company remained in operation until the 1970s. Residents of Elizabeth City would often remark about how the whole town smelled of peaches when the candy company was making one of their signature candies, Peach Goodies. Weatherly Candy put Elizabeth City on the map as a manufacturer of candy enjoyed throughout the south., The W.H. Weatherly and Company building possesses architectural features which set it apart from its neighbors in both time, style, and purpose. It captures the importance of small-town manufacturing during a time of frugality in American History. Its geographic location has long made it a landmark for all those entering or leaving Elizabeth City. Local Historic Landmark status helps to ensure that the building remains a reminder of the ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit which makes small town America great., Weatherly Lofts, LLC purchased the building in 2017, restoring and transforming it into loft-style apartments., Designated Local Historic Landmark April 23, 2018
