Before you is Bartlett Plaza honoring Edward L. "Bob" Bartlett (1904-1968), Alaska's first United States Senator. Senator Bartlett was born to Gold Rush Parents and lived in mining camps around the Interior. He was educated in Fairbanks schools, attended the University of Alaska, and worked as a miner and as a writer for the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. In 1939 Bob Bartlett was appointed Secretary for the Territory of Alaska, and served in that position until 1944, when he was elected to Congress as Alaska's nonvoting Delegate. There he worked tirelessly for Alaska statehood until that goal was achieved in 1959. He was elected to serve the new state in the Senate, and did so until his death. Senator Bartlett's wife, Vide Gaustad Bartlett, also from a pioneer family, was his able partner in all his endeavors. Senator Bob Bartlett is remembered as one of the most respected and beloved men in Alaska politics..
