1. Calumet Hotel Marker
Inscription. This building was constructed in 1887 of Sioux quartzite block. All the stone was cut with mallet and chisel, and the building design includes elements of the Richardsonian Romanesque style. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries the Calumet was hailed as one of the finest hotels in southwestern Minnesota, and was well known among train travelers, who could enter Pipestone on four rail lines as early as 1889. In 1976 the Calumet was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and in 1980 underwent extensive renovation, reopening in 1981.
