Pittsburgh's Sixteenth Ward was once part of a huge tract of land granted to John Ormsby, a soldier in the French & Indian War and one of the most influential first settlers of Pittsburgh. Stretching for miles into the southern hills of the city, it includes much of the South Side as well as Arlington, Arlington Heights, Mt. Oliver, and St. Clair. With this memorial, the ward pays tribute to its residents who served in the Great War.
