Towanda in Bradford County, Pennsylvania — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
The Means House
110 Bridge St.
This Greek Revival mansion was built by Peter Egner for William Means, "the town founder," in 1816. He was the first settler in what is now Towanda Borough and was married to Elizabeth Fox, daughter of Rudolph Fox, first settler (1770) of Towanda Flats. William ensured the future of his tiny settlement by maneuvering its designation as Bradford County seat.
His home, with fluted Ionic columns on the porch and entrance; swag and garland carved window head; and colored glass in the classic window on the second floor, was originally located on Main Street. Eventually the home was moved to its present location on Bridge Street. The means family continuously occupied this home for 129 years.
