1. The First Telephone Exchange in Portland Marker
Inscription. On this site, August 2, 1878, at No. 3 First Avenue, Portland’s first telephone exchange began operations in a back room of the Western Union Building. The American Telephone and District Telegraph Company’s pioneer switchboard served 32 customers.
 
Erected 1976 by Oregon Telephone Pioneers of Pacific Northwest Bell.

More about this marker. The marker resides under the original cast-iron colonnade of the North Wing of the New Market Block building, which was constructed in 1872, and destroyed in 1956. The colonnade was salvaged from demolition and restored to its original condition.
