Coach Tom Saylor
A tribute to our Hudson Hall of Fame Coaches
Tom Saylor was Hudson's head football coach from 1966-76. In high school, he played football as a Deerfield Minuteman from 1956-59, graduating in 1960, then attended Eastern Michigan University graduating as a Huron in 1964. That fall, he began teaching and coaching at Hudson. It was his first stop in a coaching career that spanned more than 50 years.
Saylor began as a middle school coach in 1964 and moved to the junior varsity in 1965. He became head varsity coach in 1966, and on September 20, 1968, the Tigers began a winning streak that covered eight seasons.
Saylor was a coach who could make his teams believe that they could do the impossible. Famously, as the winning streak was building, Coach Saylor visited the 8th grade football team in 1971 and told them they will be the team to break the national record. Four years later, his prediction came true as the team beat Kalamazoo Hackett. It was Hudson's 72nd straight win. "The Streak" brought unparalleled glory and attention to Hudson as the Tigers' story went national.
Coach Saylor's Tiger gridiron teams won 10 consecutive LCAA championships from 1967-76, which is still an LCAA record. The 1975 season saw the Tigers reach the first-ever MHSAA state football playoffs, but were brought down by Ishpeming on November 22, 1975, in the MHSAA state championship game by a 38-22 margin. The 72 straight wins remains the state record in Michigan. Saylor's 11-season coaching record was an unbelievable 94-5-1.
Coach Saylor, with his "effort is everything" belief, led the Tigers through arguably the greatest stretch of football success in school history. Under Saylor's leadership, the Tigers were named Class C state football champions three times from 1972-74 by the Associated Press, and were Class C state runners up the three years previous, from 1969-71. The "Winning Streak" teams of 1968-75 were inducted into the Michigan Hall of Fame in May of 1976.
Tom Saylor left Hudson in the summer of 1977 and was the head coach for over two decades at Angola High School, Indiana. He was inducted into the MHSFCA Hall of Fame in 1991. He is well-known in the Tri-State area for his Tom's Donuts business. Tom "Terrific" has three adult children Todd, Shane and Taryn.
