Hudson in Lenawee County, Michigan — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Coach Chris Luma
Chris Luma has been a Hudson Tiger his entire life. He began by playing junior high football in 1971, and in high school, he became a standout quarterback during Hudson's winning streak. One of his proudest moments was playing in Michigan's first state football final. He graduated high school in 1977.
In the early 1980's, Luma became an assistant coach at Hudson leading the middle school teams. Moving up the coaching ranks, he become the new varsity head coach in 1997. It was the start of a remarkable 23-year tenure where he led the Tigers as they played smash-mouth football. Running his beloved Winged-T formation combined with superb defense, his teams claimed five regional crowns and eight district championships. Luma is tied at the top of the county standings for most playoff wins in the 46-year history of the playoffs with 28 victories.
In 2010, the Tigers won the only MHSAA state football championship in school history, and it is still the only 11-player title in Lenawee County. Hudson beat Ishpeming 28-26 at Ford Field on Nov. 27th to claim the Division 7 crown. The championship win over the Hematites avenged the playoff loss that ended the winning streak 35 years earlier.
His dominance of the LCAA saw Coach Luma win more league championships then any other previous LCAA coach, claiming 12. From 2008-2012 alone, the Tigers won 33 straight regular season games. Coach Luma also produced two Division 7 state runner-up teams in 2003 and 2009. The steady, even-handed leadership of Coach Luma led Hudson to the heights of Michigan high school football. He built confidence in his teams. They knew they could do it, and he took them to the elite levels.
With his brother, Mark, at his side as assistant coach for nearly two decades, Luma achieved a stellar coaching career winning numerous county, regional, and state awards. He became the winningest coach in Hudson's history with an overall record of 182-68 for a 73 winning percentage. In March of 2018, he was inducted into the MHSFCA Hall of Fame. It was the highlight of his coaching honors.
His 23 years leading Hudson nearly doubled the previous 12-year mark of longevity. He coached while working for Rima Manufacturing for over 40 years. He and his wife, Tonie, have four children: Sarah, Erin, Zach and Courtney.
