1. Brightman Building Marker

Inscription. On December 29, 1873 this vacant lot was transferred from a Mr. Wright to the International Organization of Odd Fellows. It was then sold by the I.O.O.F. represented by Barnes and Wright to Redden and Turner on August 11, 1874. Redden sold the property to a Mr. Paine on December 30, 1889. Paine and Turner then borrowed the money from Southern Home & Loan to construct this building in 1891. Turner then donated a 5/8 interest to F.E. Adams, a local banker in 1898. Then a Mr. Dunlap transferred the remaining interest to O.O. Brightman in January 1911. O.O. Brightman transferred this interest to F.E. Adams the banker in August 1911. When F.E. Adams went bankrupt, he reportedly was faced by an angry O.O. Brightman with a gun, decided to deed this building and the Victorian home below to Mr. Brightman. O.O. Brightman's son Oswald owned and operated a Whites Auto Store in the building for many years. This beautiful Queen Ann home can still be seen today just up the street at Houston and Walcott.
