1. Goodson Building Marker
Inscription.
Goodson Building. . In 1877 this location was deeded to Martin V. "Uncle Mart" Fleming. Once the building was constructed the Fleming Meat Market operated here from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. During the late 1800s Fleming transferred the deed to JD Sherrill, Eliza Kempner of Galveston (who by then was overseeing her late husband's banking and grocery supply businesses), and TJ Holmsley. These transactions appear to have been in order to secure lines of credit for supplying Fleming's Market. Fleming's daughter Camille conveyed the building to Judge Newton R. Lindsey in 1904. Judge Lindsey's family owned the building for 34 years selling it to Wade H. Evridge in 1939. The Evridge family owned the building for the next 30 years. Other businesses that have occupied this space include a telegraph office, and for many years, Bob Stanton's tailor shop. Herbert Goodson entered the insurance business in 1947. In 1969 he purchased J.H. "Tiny" Burton's interest in Burton and Goodson Insurance. In 1971 Herbert Goodson purchased this building and moved his offices here from down the street. The east half of this building was occupied in the early 1970s by J.P. (Buddie) Hicks Real Estate, while Goodson Insurance occupied the west half. Later Hicks Realty moved to the NE corner of the square Goodson Insurance has been the sole occupant of the building since that time. The faηade of the building was restored in 2003 during Comanche's Main Street program.
