Regarding Monongahela Inclined Plane. Designed and built by Prussian-born engineer John Endres in 1870, it is the oldest continuously operating funicular in the United States. It also was the first used for transporting passengers. The Monongahela Inclined Plane was designated a Pittsburgh Historic Landmark in 1970 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
