Inscription. European flowers that bloomed at the time of Pentecost were known as Pentecost flowers. In Germany, the name for Pentecost is "Pinkster" and this flower became known as Pinks, or English Pinks. This flower is especially associated with the Holy Spirit because the flower petals are seen to represent the tongues of flame of the descending Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
