1. William Dewey Hobson Marker

Inscription. Born Green County, Illinois 1829, crossed plains to the gold fields in ox-drawn wagon 1849. Settled permanently San Buenaventura 1859, becoming farmer, builder, newspaperman and civic leader. Appointed by his fellow citizens in 1871 to represent them in Sacramento, he successfully lobbied for the creation of Ventura County. Built the first two public buildings, a schoolhouse in 1872, and the county courthouse in 1874. Father of ten. Died in 1915.
