On this site stood the J.S. Wortham Company, Inc., established circa 1909.

James Stewart Worthan, of Ridgeway, NC, and Mary Lucy Green, of Warren County, NC, were married on May 26, 1894. To this union were born 13 children, the second of whom was Eleanor Quivous Wortham (Grady), the mother of Marion Eleanor Grady (Coleman) and Charles Stewart Grady.

Mr. an Mrs. Wortham began their married life together in Ridgeway, NC, where they raised cantaloupes for markets along the eastern seaboard. Mr. Wortham served as Postmaster of Ridgeway from 1895 – 1897. After a very brief sojourn as school teachers, they decided to move to Warrenton and set up in business, as well as continue farming.

Today, Charles Stewart Grady and his wife Theresa (“Terri”) reside in the original home place formerly known as “Wortham’s Grove” adjacent to the Warrenton Town limits on Ridgeway-Warrenton Road. Mr. & Mrs. Wortham are buried in the family cemetery located on property.
