Following the initial organization of Igloo #1 in February 1907 at Nome, Igloo #2 in June 1907 at Candle, and Igloo #3 at St. Michael, these igloos met in convention at Nome August 4, 1908, and created the "Grand Igloo, Pioneers of Alaska."

Purpose was to unite the Alaska Pioneers by a permanent organization. The object, quoting its constitution, to "preserve the names of all of Alaska's pioneers on its rolls; to collect and preserve the literature and incidents of Alaska's history, and to promote the best interest of Alaska.

Fairbanks Igloo #4 was organized in 1909. There have been 33 igloo charters since the beginning, in 1984 sixteen were still active. Nome Auxiliary #1 was chartered in 1912. Since that time there have been 17 Auxiliary Charters, of which 14 were still active in 1984. Auxiliary No. 8, Fairbanks, was chartered in 1948.
