Regarding Veteranendenkmal / Veterans Memorial. On the initiative of the veterans' association, a memorial was erected in the revolutionary year of 1848 for those who died in the wars from 1792 to 1815. Of the 1,700-strong Mannheim infantry regiment that marched to Russia with Napoleon's Great Army in 1812, only 100 soldiers returned. After Mannheim was captured by the French emperor's opponents (Austria, Prussia and Russia), a Russian corps crossed the Rhine for the first time at Sandhofen at the turn of the year 1813/1814 and brought the war to the area to the left of the Rhine, which at that time belonged to France. In the following years, Mannheim became a military camp for passing armies, which resulted in billeting and food shortages for the population. To commemorate these events, the veterans' association handed its memorial over to the city's care in 1863 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig.
