Postgeschichte im Quadrat O 2

Postal History Square O 2
Inscription.

The postal service in Mannheim in the 17th century was in a bad state because there was no post office in the city. With the city's rise to the status of a royal residence, the postal situation improved. New contracts between the Electorate of the Palatinate and the Thurn and Taxis Imperial Post stipulated that regular postal routes now also went through Mannheim, which was thus connected to Berlin, Vienna, Munich and Basel, among others. A distinction is made between travelling posts, i.e. stagecoaches that start at the "Zum Goldenen Pflug" inn in F 2, and the letter post, whose post office is located at O 2, 4. Square O 2 remains a regular post office in Mannheim to this day. In 1837 the post office was located on the Planken in the corner building O 2, 6-7. This was replaced by a new, larger building between 1880 and 1882. Between 1900 and 1903 an extension towards Paradeplatz followed. After severe destruction in the Second World War, the current building was built in 1957 and is now a listed building.
