Inscription. The Jacob Lake lookout tower has been used by lone fire lookouts for more than half a century. As in 1934, when the tower was built, vigilant lookouts still spot and plot fires from on high.

The 80-foot-high steel tower you see here was built during the Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps - and continues to serve as a lookout tower today. Lookouts still use the "Osborne" fire-finder to plot the location of any fires that they spot.

Where towers once served as the main way we spotted fires, we are increasingly relying on aircraft and even satellite imagery to spot and monitor fires.
