Carl Gunschmann
The painter Carl Gunschmann (1895-1984) was born in this house on December 18, 1895. He played a role in Darmstadt's art scene for decades. With his independent painting style, which was between expressionism and Neuer Sachlichkeit (“New Objectivity”), he had a great influence on the regional art scene. As a member of the literary and artistic circle around the magazines "Dachstube" and "Tribunal," he illustrated many publications of the Dachstubenverlag from 1916 onwards. In 1919 he was a co-founder of the Darmstadt Secession and its president from 1957 onwards, and honorary president from 1966 onwards. Numerous awards crowned his work: in 1949 he received the Georg Büchner Prize, he was the recipient of the Silver Medal of Merit and the Johann Heinrich Merck Award from the city of Darmstadt, and the recipient of the Federal Cross of Merit.
