In diesem Haus wurde am 18. Dezember 1895 der Maler Carl Gunschmann (1895-1984) geboren. Er bestimmte über Jahrzehnte das Darmstädter Kunstgeschehen mit. In seinem eigenständigen Malstil zwischen Expressionismus und neuer Sachlichkeit übte er großen Einfluss auf die regionale Kunstszene aus. Als Mitglied des literarischen-künstlerischen Zirkels um die Zeitschriften „Dachstube“ und „Tribunal“ illustrierte er seit 1916 viele Publikationen des Dachstubenverlags. 1919 war er Mitbegründer der Darmstädter Sezession sowie ab 1957 deren Präsident, ab 1966 Ehrenpräsident. Zahlreiche Auszeichnungen krönten sein Wirken: 1949 erhielt er den Georg-Büchner-Preis, er war Träger der Silbernen Verdienstplakette und der Johann-Heinrich-Merck-Ehrung der Stadt Darmstadt und Träger des Bundesverdienstkreuzes.

In 1919 he was a co-founder of the Darmstadt Secession and its president from 1957 onwards, and honorary president from 1966 onwards. Numerous awards crowned his work: in 1949 he received the Georg Büchner Prize, he was the recipient of the Silver Medal of Merit and the Johann Heinrich Merck Award from the city of Darmstadt, and the recipient of the Federal Cross of Merit.
