Belmont in Nye County, Nevada — The American Mountains (Southwest)
Monitor-Belmont Mill
With the location of silver in the Monitor Mountains in 1865, the Silver Bend Mining District was formed in October 1865. The town of Belmont was founded in the same year, and mining was widespread in the area. This mill was a joint effort of the Monitor Mine and the Belmont Mine, when both were owned by the same investors. Construction began in late 1872, and it opened in 1873. Ore from the mines slowed to a stop in 1875, and the mill was closed. In 1878, with the Barcelona Mine's success in the nearby Spanish Belt Mining District, the mill was reopened to process its ore. The mill's Stedefeldt furnace proved inadequate and required replacement in 1881. It reopened in 1882, but was only used intermittently until 1889, when it closed for good.
