In 1614, the subdivision and construction of the island began, under the care of Christophe Marie, whose name this bridge took, associated with Poulletier and Le Regrattier. A central road, two series of quays and three cross streets constitute the network of this regular and homogeneous habitat completed around 1660. From sumptuous mansions to the most modest houses, a harmonious diversity reigns on the facades, the profound unity of an architectural style announces the achievements of the reign of Louis XIV.
Having remained apart from the upheavals of the roads and the urban fabric of the last two centuries, the Ile Saint-Louis has suffered little mutilation and still presents the appearance of a peaceful stone vessel anchored in the middle of the Seine.
