1. Friedrichsbau / Friedrich's Building Marker
1601-07 als Wohnpalast Kurfürst Friedrichs IV. (1592-1610) über älteren Fundamenten und der Schlosskapelle Kurfürst Ruprechts I. unter Johannes Schoch errichtet. Skulpturen der Fassade von Sebastian Götz. Im Pfälzischen Erbfolgekrieg und durch Blitzschlag 1769 das Gebäudeinnere ausgebrannt. 1895-1903 nach Diskussionen um den Denkmalschutz Renovierung mit einem Eisendachstuhl und Ausbau der beiden Obergeschosse.
1601-07 as Elector Friedrich IV's residential palace. Erected (1592–1610) over older foundations and the Elector Ruprecht I's castle chapel under Johannes Schoch. Façade sculptures by Sebastian Götz. Building interior burnt down during the Palatinate Successor War and due to lightning strikes in 1769. Renovation with an iron truss and extension of both upper floors in 1895–1903 after discussions.

In the late 17th century, the castle was repeatedly attacked and ultimately destroyed by the French in the War of the Grand Alliance. These catastrophic events are commemorated in a spectacular fireworks display, held several times each year. In 1764, after some makeshift repairs, the battered castle was heavily damaged again: this time by the forces of Nature, in the form of two devastating lightning strikes.
