Thomas B. Stewart Legislative Office Building 2009
Scottish Rite Temple 1928 - 2009
Inscription.
Built in 1928 to house the Scottish Rite Temple, the Thomas B. Stewart Legislative Office Building was purchased by the City and Borough of Juneau in 2007 and deeded to the Legislative Council in 2007. The Legislative Affairs Agency, under the direction of the Legislative Council, renovated the aging structure for use as legislative meeting rooms and offices. The building is named in honor of one of Alaska's founding fathers, the late Thomas B. Stewart, Secretary of the Alaska Constitutional Convention, member in the Territorial House of Representatives, Senator in the first Alaska State Legislature, Superior Court Judge, war hero, skier, opera singer, storyteller and father of seven children. It is fitting that Alaska lawmakers continue their work in a building named for the man who helped ensure the creation of the 49th State. The refurbished building where the Mason's once met is now a part of the Legislature's Capital Complex.
Erected by Alaska Legislative Council.
