Unter Kurfürst Karl (1680-85) als verstärktes Bollwerk nach Norden angelegt. 1681-83 Karlsturm vermutlich unter Hofbaumeister Wachter erbaut. Durch das Tor der Karlsschanze führt der Burgweg zum Schloss.

English:
Installed under Elector Karl (1680-85) as a strengthened bulwark toward the north. Karlsturm built 1681-83, probably under the royal master builder Wachter. The fortress path leads to the castle through the Karl's entrenchment (Karlsschanze) door.

2. The lower Karl's Entrenchment Door and Marker
ultimately destroyed by the French in the War of the Grand Alliance. These catastrophic events are commemorated in a spectacular fireworks display, held several times each year. In 1764, after some makeshift repairs, the battered castle was heavily damaged again: this time by the forces of Nature, in the form of two devastating lightning strikes. The once-proud residence caught fire – and was left in ruins.
