Regarding Capt. Chuck Cooper. Captain Charles W. Cooper was one of seven men who died during the first Gulf War on February 21, 1991, when the UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter he was piloting got caught in a heavy sandstorm in Saudi Arabia and crashed. Cooper and his crew were on an emergency medical evacuation mission. Cooper, 33 at the time, graduated from Thompson High School in St. Charles in 1975 and enlisted in the Army in 1983. He is buried at Garfield Cemetery in Campton Hills, about five miles west of this memorial.

The Chuck Cooper memorial honors a St. Charles pilot who died in a helicopter crash during the first Gulf War in 1991. The VFW Post 5036 Veterans Memorial is in the rear, with the Fox River in the distance.
