The Sunrise House 1985
The "Sunrise House" was built about 1895 as a wedding gift for James H. Wood, Jr., by his father, Captain J.H. Wood, who lived in the large brick house next door. J.H. Wood was a confederate veteran and one of the first attorneys to practice in Bristol, Virginia. The sunrise symbolized a new era for the younger James Wood, and was highlighted by the display of early sun rays over the front entry. The house was sold in 1900 when the Woods left this city, and has since been sold 14 times It was purchased in 1985 from V.N. "Bud" Phillips, who lives in the old Captain Wood home next door. It was renovated and used as a law office from 1985 to 1996. It was renovated again in 1998 and used again as a law office for Bernard S. Via, III.
