1. Ladle Marker
Similar to a super-size coffee cup, the foundry ladle transferred molten metal at the Treadwell foundry and pattern shop, the first one north of San Francisco, in operation 1888-1917. It took a month to ship parts, so the foundry made replacement parts and new equipment, giving more than 30 patents to employees. Heated by an innovative 2-ton electric furnace using hydroelectric power, molten metals were ladled into sand-filled molds to manufacture castings for mining parts. During World War II, the foundry furnished castings for the war effort. In this 1907 photo, Treadwell foundry workers (founders) pose with their shovels, castings, and an unfinished wheel. The Treadwell foundry was destroyed by fire in 1967.
