Taking the oath of office on January 4, 1978, Luther H. Conyers, Jr. served as a member of the Bainbridge City Council for 37 years. At the time of his retirement in December 2015, he was the longest serving councilman in the city's history. In 2008 he was inducted into the Georgia Municipal Association Hall of Fame. Mr. Conyers served in the Korean War with the United States Army from January 1951 until December 1952 and received the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars. He was very active in the Rotary Club, American Legion Post No. 502, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Bainbridge-Decatur County Chamber of Commerce to name a few. He and his wife Gwendolyn are both retired educators and are members of the Savannah State University Hall of Fame.

Excerpt: Bainbridge citizens gathered together at the fountain plaza behind City Hall on Tuesday night for the unveiling of a plaque renaming the plaza in honor of Luther H. Conyers. He stated that he was born on a plantation to uneducated parents.
