Doras de Brun
⎯⎯⎯
The Browne Doorway
To commemorate the 300th anniversary of Eyre Square
"Is éard atá sa ghné seo ná doras ar urlár na talún agus fuinneog oiriail ar 1ú urlár. Is ó phríomhéadan theach mór Dhoiminic de Brún agus a mhná ceile Maria Ni Loingsigh a tháinig sé agus is é 1627 an dáta a chuirtear leis. Tá a gcuid armas os cionn fhráma an dorais, rud atá ina shampla breá de dhearadh atá faoi anáil Renaissance. Aistríodh an doras ón áit a raibh sé ó thús ar Shráid an Gheata Bhig. Thug an tÚdarás Áitiúil anseo é sa bhliain 1905 le cistiú ó Chumann Seandálaíochta na Gaillimhe agus ón gComhairle Ceantair Uirbigh (Comhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe anois)"
This feature consists of a ground floor doorway and a 1st floor Oriel window and came from the main frontage of the mansion of Dominic Browne and his wife Maria Lynch and is dated 1627. Their achievements of arms occur above the door case which is a fine example of Renaissance influenced design. The doorway was relocated from its original position in Abbeygate Street and relocated here in 1905 by Local Authority with funding from Galway Archaeological Society and Urban District Council (now Galway City Council).
Officially unveiled by Mayor Terry O'Flaherty
on the 15th of September 2012
[On rear of doorway support]
Part of the house built in the year of our Lord 1627 for Martin Browne, merchant, was removed from ruins in Lower Abbeygate Street and was erected here in 1905, to witness to the architectural character of the great houses that were built in the days of Galway's civic opulence.
Erected 2012 by Galway City Council.
