1634, Rivière Dufresny founded a mirror factory on this site, which would experience considerable development. In 1665, Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Louis XIV’s Minister of Finance, wanted to give France independence in the manufacture of glass and mirrors. Until then, the Republic of Venice had supplied the whole of Europe.

The Royal Glass and Mirror Factory was created by letters patent in 1665. Manufacturing began in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine under the direction of Nicolas du Noyer. Venetian workers were hired to copy Venetian manufacturing processes. With over 400 workers, it was the largest company in the suburb. In 1667, manufacturing was transferred to Tourlaville in the Manche department, while the Parisian Manufacture was responsible for the shaping operations: smoothing, polishing and silvering the glass.
