1. Cedar Grove School Marker
Inscription.
Cedar Grove School. Circa 1885. This surviving one room schoolhouse is built on the original one thousand acre property of Thomas Warne, one of the 24 proprietors of East Jersey. Several generations of the Warne family taught at the Cedar Grove School. This location has been a school site since 1851. Two other school buildings existed on this site at different times but were moved to other locations. The present building, a wooden structure, was erected in 1885. It was originally clapboard and the wooden shingles on the building today were added in the early 1800s. Originally there were three windows on the east side of the building and three on the west side. The original building had a little porch, and early in the 20th century a roof added over the interior of the building. It has its original wainscoting, slate blackboards and heating stove. There is a platform for the teachers desk. Electricity was put in the building in the late 1920s. The school was closed in 1948. The enrollment of the Cedar Grove School was between 20 and 30 pupils through the years. In 1897 through the efforts of the Middlesex County Superintendent of Schools, teachers, and students, a USA flag was furnished for all schools. , This marker is a gift from the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders
