Inscription. From 1887 to 1904, Henry Flagler's railroad connected his many hotels seen here on the illuminated floor map. Railroad connection along the East Coast opened up the entire state to commerce, all the way to a once sleepy village now known as Miami. In 1905, Flagler began construction of the Key West Extension, anticipating the completion of the Panama Canal in 1913. Flagler gambled that the deepwater harbor of Key West would capitalize on that event. Thought impossible by most, and once called "Flagler's Folly," the Key West Extension became known to many as the "Eighth Wonder of the World."

Erected by Sails to Rails Museum.
