Lowville in Lewis County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Village of Lowville Lions Park
This photo [top left] shows the action in preparation for the fair with horses, buggies and people crowding the streets. This view of the corner of Dayan and State Streets shows Stoddard and Bateman, dry goods store, H. F. Weber Real Estate and Insurance located upstairs and Bostwick Clothing Store, Fowler and Green Hardware store traveling south down the street.
The 10th Cavalry Regiment was formed as a segregated African-American unit during [sic-immediately after] the Civil War. It was one of the original "Buffalo Soldier" regiments in the post Civil War Regular Army. It served in combat during the Indian Wars in the western United States, the Spanish American War in Cuba and in the Philippine-American War. This regiment marched through Lowville in 1910 to Pine Camp (Fort Drum) for summer training.
The cobblestone road was removed and the streets were paved in October 1912. Cars were once parked at an angle along State Street. A view from the Bateman shows a close up of the now missing buildings.
October 22, 1999 changed the look of this corner forever. Five businesses: Sherwin Williams, Comfort Zone (previously Eggie's Sport Shop and Beyer's), Hair Mane (formerly Cataldo's Hardware), Dollar Store (Graham's 5 & 10), and Urbaniak Studio (formerly Suburban Propane) were destroyed in the fire. Efforts of the Lowville Fire Department, nine surrounding fire departments and a solid firewall stopped the fire from spreading further south.
