1. Jonathan Buck’s Sawmill Marker

Inscription. Colonel Jonathan Buck arrived in what is now Bucksport in 1762 aboard his sloop Sally with a group of men from Haverhill, Mass. They were here to survey land that had been granted to them by the Massachusetts colonial court. The first buildings went up in 1764 in what was then Plantation No. 1. Col. Buck's sawmill was built here at Mill Stream to produce boards, staves, shingles, and clapboards for building the houses and businesses of the township, and for sale in Boston and beyond. Other early buildings included houses, barns, a trading house, a smokehouse for fish, and a blacksmith's shop.
