1. Bank of Elkin Marker
Inscription.
Bank of Elkin opened in 1921 at 111 E Main Street. Initially shorter in depth, the bank building was designed in a neoclassical style and offered hitching posts at its rear. Bank of Elkin closed under the bank holiday' declared by President Roosevelt in March 1933 to control nationwide bank failures during The Great Depression. It reopened in August 1933, being greeted by spirited community fanfare of financial support, loyalty, patriotism and relief from economic hardship. An Elkin Tribune newspaper ad by Chatham Manufacturing Co. declared: "It's a Grand and Glorious Feeling To Again Have a Bank!" In 1937 the bank moved to the NW corner of Main and Bridge streets. This location then became W.M. Wall Jewelers until 1993. This view is of the original faηade before mid-20th century renovations.
