Near Bayfield in Bayfield County, Wisconsin — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
A Family Affair
The Hokensons at Little Sand Bay were just one of many commercial fishing families in the area. This pound net boat came from Rocky Island where a community of fish camps was established in the 1930s. The Olsen, Erickson, Benson, Edwards, Hadland, Nies, and Nelson families all fished Rocky's surrounding waters. Everyone, young and old, pitched in to help.
Caption:
Fishermen often built tools specifically designed for their needs. This pound net boat is a good example. The flat-bottomed design provided fishermen with a stable work platform for harvesting fish from pound nets.
