The Towns That River Power Built
Damming the Androscoggin harnessed the power that attracted industry. From sawmills, wollen mills, then the Cabot cotton mill, to Topsham's pulp and paper mills, the river provided cheap and plentiful power. It drew entrepreneurs who built the industries that then helped build Topsham and Brunswick.

1835...Brunswick Manufacturing Company built this mill of granite to produce cotton textiles. It was part of:
1847 Worumbo Mill
1853 Cabot Company
1857 Cabot Manufacturing Company
1800s Cabot Mill
1900 For nearly 150 years three dams, along the falls powered the mills. Today a single dam generates electrical power.
1910 Mill during rebuilding and expansion between 1890 and 1920
1942 Robert Verney buys mill. Mill closed in 1955.
Though periodic flooding destroyed dams, mills and bridges, they were quickly rebuilt.
