1. Castle Tucker Marker
This unusual mansion was built in 1807 by Judge Silas Lee. After building several other houses in town, this was his architectural masterpiece. Sadly, he and his wife Tempe were only able to live in the house for seven years before his death in 1814.
The house was purchased in 1858 by Captain Richard H. Tucker, Jr., son of a prominent local shipping family. Richard and his wife Mollie made it a fashionable Victorian home for their family, which grew to include five children. They filled the house with furniture, added a three-story piazza to the original front of the house, and built a new Italianate entrance facing Lee Street. Over time, the house became known as Castle Tucker.
By the 1880s, family income had diminished. The Tuckers' life of affluence became one of increasing struggle. Poverty prevented further renovation or large scale redecoration.
The Tuckers' granddaughter, Jane S. Tucker, inherited the property in 1964. For thirty years, she preserved the family history and property. In 1997, she gave the house and contents to Historic New England to ensure its continued care and protection. Today, it is a
