1. Rundlett Block - 1872 marker
Richard Tucker Rundlett, an entrepreneur from two old local families, built this brick and granite commercial building in 1872. Offering modern shop, office and meeting space, it has anchored the north side of Main Street ever since.
In 1884, this one building housed Gibbs & Rundlett Clothing, Books & Notions store, Sarah Hilton Dry Goods, Joseph Borland Shoes, Sol Holbrook Jewelry, Rufus Sewall Law Office, Louisa Elms Notions, Sarah Carr Dry & Fancy Goods and the Benjamin Smith Law Office. The third floor had meeting rooms for fraternal organizations including the Aramber Lodge No. 71 of the Order of Oddfellows, Lincoln Lodge No.3 and Masons Hall. Lectures, concerts, and dances were held in the spacious and airy ballroom.
Sol Holbrook's family came to Wiscasset before 1750. He learned his trade at the Waltham Watch Co. and opened a jewelry store in Wiscasset before 1888. Sol was a walking advertisement for his store as we can see from his tie pin, cufflinks and pinky ring. By 1898, he added bicycles to the shop and in 1909 he became a liquor agent. Sol Holbrook was also our Town Clerk for 44 years. His shop finally closed
