1. An Enduring Tradition Marker
The Chapman Reed house lawn has been a town gathering place since around 1823 and the tradition continues to this day. Individuals and groups, such as the ladies of the local Art Colony Mandolin and Guitar Club, have often used the space to hold sales and fundraisers. At the March 1923 town meeting residents approved a plan to remodel the house in the Greek Revival style to serve as a free public library. Several year-round residents and summer visitors alike eagerly sought ways to raise money for the project or to otherwise contribute. Machinist "Hite" Thurston donated the wrought lighting fixtures in the shape of antique lanterns while "the ladies" made curtains. Veterans, the Boothbay Harbor Band, and other spectators crowded the lawn at the dedication on July 11, 1923.
