1. Preserving a Business Dynasty Marker

Inscription.
The Leader of the first permanent European settlement established in 1730 in Boothbay was Samuel McCobb. His son, William McCobb, was an important businessman and government official for well over 50 years. "Squire" William's holdings included an inn, a store, rental properties, and approximately 200 feet of wharves that stretched from the current Granary Way to Wharf Street. He was also heavily involved in the shipping and fishing business. When nearly 70, he had this large, double-pile two story brick structure built in 1807 as a double house for his nephews, Jacob Auld and Joseph McCobb, who were assuming management of his businesses. The large grassy area next to the house long served as an unofficial town common, perfect for a baseball game or a leisurely picnic.
