1. A Lovely Spot for a Hotel Marker
In the mid-1800s, well-to-do men commonly spread their money among different types of businesses. An ambitious black- smith named John Weymouth was not only a respected shipbuilder, but also one of the town's earliest hoteliers. Acquiring some land of the Auld-McCobb estate through marriage, he moved the existing buildings from the site of the present-day post office and built a fine hotel, the Weymouth House, on the plot. The hotel's stable can be seen located to the rear of the building. This parking lot was a grassy area to the front of the hotel, traditionally used as an unofficial park or common of the central Harbor area. The Weymouth House was torn down by 1926, replaced by Hotel Gara. Later renamed Hotel Fullerton, then Village Inn, this building was demolished in 1969.
