1. Memorial Day Parade on the Bank Square Marker
Automobiles were still rare on Townsend Avenue on Memorial Day in 1912, although the danger they pose to pedestrians and horse-drawn traffic is recognized by the sign on the post warning them to "go slow." Behind the sign is the bank building, built in 1906 and first occupied by the First National and the Boothbay Savings Bank on the ground floor and the customs house above. In front of the bank is the horse trough, with a thirsty boy drinking from its lion's head water spout. Next on the left side is Hodgdon's blacksmith shop. It was repurposed into a shop by Ethel Logan in 1925 and remodeled to its current appearance in 1945. The structures on the right are much the same as they are today, with their owners and wares sold having changed frequently over the past century.
