The Maine Trading Post, the barn-like building now housing Kaler's restaurant, was built in 1908 as Sherman's Livery Stable. The small windows along the lower side of the building mark some of the 70 horse stalls. There were horses for rent, often by traveling salesmen who came to town by steamer. An elevator inside the building moved carriages and sleighs to the upper floor. Even when built, however, a role was planned for autos in the business. In 1915, two Ford touring cars and a truck were included in the firm's inventory, which was then billed as Sherman's Livery and Garage. Sherman's can also be seen from the harbor above the stern of the navy subchaser SC138. Built in 1917 at Hodgdon's yard in East Boothbay, it patrolled the Atlantic seaboard until the end of WWl.

En 1915, deux voitures de tourisme Ford et un camion font partie de l'inventaire de la firme qui s'appelle alors Sherman's Livery and Garage. On aperçoit vu du port l'agence Sherman au-dessus de la poupe du navire Subchaser SC138. Construit en 1917 au chantier naval Hogdon à East Boothbay, il patrouille la côte atlantique jusqu'à la fin de la Première Guerre Mondiale.
